Environmental and Climate Advisor CARE International in Zimbabwe is recruiting for livelihoods, food aid and resilience project targeting Buhera and Mutare Districts (Manicaland Province) and Chivi and Zaka Districts (Masvingo Province). Takunda, which means “we have overcome” in Shona, is a 5 year USAID Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance program led by CARE in a consortium. Its aim is to increase on-farm and off-farm incomes, improve nutrition, and work with women, men, girls and boys to build resilience to shocks and stressors. Job Description The Advisor will provide input for all project activities deemed likely to have a potential environmental impact and recommend measures that will be taken to mitigate any environmental hazards that may result from project activities in compliance with government and donor regulations. Key Duties and Responsibilities: * Ability to lead the design and implementation of sound and sustainable environmental practices and climate risk management for project interventions * Working closely with an Environmental contractor, contribute input to an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) and other environmental compliance analyses for the Donor pursuant to US Regulation 22 CFR 216, such as a pesticide Safer Use Action Plan (SUAP), Water Quality Assurance Plan (WQAP) and an Environmental Assessment (EA) for watershed activities, etc.; * Contribute input and recommend adaptation strategies during a Climate Risk Management (CRM) screening process * Ensure that appropriate environmental and climate measures are proposed and met; * Undertake follow-up monitoring to ensure that proposed mitigation measures and climate risk management strategies are implemented according to set guidelines; * Conduct supervision and monitoring field visits, including performing spot checks for environmental compliance, to all implementing partners’ sites. * Oversee or support reporting efforts on environmental and climate indicators, as well as ensure the completion of environmental and social screening of site-specific activities for which implementing partners will conduct their activities. * Collaborate with Environmental contractor and Takunda implementing partners for the delivery of environment and climate workshops and other capacity building components; * Assisting Environmental contractor and partners in piloting the new USAID NEAT+ system; * Work with project partners to develop case studies on environmental and climate risk management and best practice. * Capacity building on environmental tools and frameworks, especially for NRM Staff and for implementing partners. * Provide input to implementing staff, the Donor, and Environmental contractor as required, which may be monthly, quarterly and/or annually, on environmental impacts, climate risks, and mitigation/adaptation measures. * Provide technical guidance, training and engages closely in Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) as part of Early Warning Systems (EWS)

Work/Educational Requirements

* Advanced university degree (Master's degree or higher) in Environmental or Climate Science, Natural Resources Management (with an emphasis on the environment and/or climate change) , Environmental Impact Assessment, development (emphasis on environment and/or climate change), , or any relevant field is essential. * +5 years of experience in environmental assessment and climate risk management. * Proven experience in documentation and the ability to work independently, including remotely if necessary. * Experience with environmental assessment tools or processes for rural community projects within a development context; – Proficiency in computer skills including experience of MS Word, Excel, MS Office Project, GIS and any relevant environmental analysis package – Understanding and demonstrated commitment to the importance of gender and youth issues in food security programming. – Demonstrated commitment to principles of Gender Equity and Diversity, as evidenced in previous positions / programming.
