Research Agricultural Engineer
We seek to fill a vacant post of RESEARCH AGRICULTURAL ENGINEER in the Department of Agricultural Engineering.
Do other duties that may be assigned by the Director and/or the Board of Z.S.A.E.S. Do all these responsibilities in a manner demonstrating support for and adherence to the ZSAES Safety Policy and Procedures, Ethics Policy, Vision and Strategy as well as to exercise good judgment, common sense and diplomacy in so doing.
The Research Agricultural Engineer will establish, in consultation with the Director of the Experiment Station, innovative and scientific research programs designed to increase sustainable production, utilization and processing of sugarcane and its by-products while ensuring safe and sustainable use of the land and the environment. Design and/or improve agricultural processes including the latest planting, harvesting, haulage and irrigation techniques as well as plan and implement new and/or alternative farming/production systems.
Additional duties include transfer of technology in the form of “On”- and “Off’-Station demonstrations; responding to enquiries from, advising and training of, cane growers, agronomists, agricultural engineers at the estates and other professionals at the Z.S.A.E.S.; making presentations during sugarcane Field Days, Seminars and Road Shows. Establish effective and harmonious work relationships with colleagues at the Z.S.A.E.S.; manage, support, and train technical and research support staff in the Agricultural Engineering Department and at the Station. Establish and maintain relationships with appropriate stakeholders within the sugarcane industry, region and internationally in order to promote continual exchange of information and ideas
on fostering growth of the sugarcane industry. Do other duties that may be assigned by the Director and/or the Board of Z.S.A.E.S.

• Profitable Alternative Production Systems for Growing Sugarcane
• Appropriate Technologies, Facilities, Equipment and Machinery for Land Tillage, Irrigation, Water Conveyance, Application of Agrochemicals, Harvesting and Haulage of Cane, as well as Disposal of Waste
• Appropriate and Effective Facilities, Measures and Systems for Drainage as well as for Soil and Water conservation
• Appropriately Trained Cane Growers, Estate Employees and Technical and Research Support Staff at the Station
• Well-managed Financial and Human Resources in the Agricultural Engineering Division;
• Safe Working Environment in the Division;
Qualifications and Experience
A minimum of a Master’s degree in Agriculture Engineering or Irrigation Engineering/ Mechanization is a must. The Bachelor’s degree should have been in Agricultural Engineering or in Agriculture [Irrigation Engineering / Mechanization]. A relevant Doctoral degree and a professional license will be an added advantage. The incumbent must have good research skills and extensive knowledge and experience in handling important agricultural procedures, equipment, machinery and tools, irrigation systems and their evaluation and maintenance, simulations models, use of instrumentation for automated data collection. Other competencies include: ability to lead cross-functional teams in a timeline driven environment; excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with different departments both “On”- and “Off- Station to enhance productivity; ability to interact with other professionals and the public in a manner that promotes collegiality; good leadership skills to handle and supervise the agricultural technical support team and ability to educate and train them; computer literacy; ability to plan, organize work; integrity, resourcefulness, initiative, maturity and judgment, tact, and a clean
