Program / department summary
Mercy Corps Zimbabwe’s WASH programming in Manicaland province has supported the response and preparedness efforts against waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid and enhanced government capacity to respond and deliver water and sanitation services. MC WASH interventions focus on rehabilitating communal and institutional WASH infrastructure, distribution of NFI kits, public health promotion and good waste management disposal. MC works closely with the government technical institutions supporting key district, provincial health teams and extension agents through resources in kind, joint planning, assessments and response. Mercy Corps is the focal lead agent for Manicaland Province’s WASH cluster of NGO partners, representing the National WASH Cluster in the province.
Mercy Corps is implementing a humanitarian emergency WASH program in three districts of Manicaland Province. The project is mainly focusing on rehabilitation of water supply points, sanitation, health and hygiene promotion/behaviors. The broad aim of the program is to build community resilience to WASH related shocks through capacity building, public-private partnerships approaches and promoting cost effective water and sanitation technological innovations. The program works closely with the local authorities, government technical ministries, affected populations and collaborate with other development partners in the project area.
General position summary
The WASH Officers will be responsible for community mobilization, selection, training of health promoters, community, and school health club facilitators. The incumbent for each district is expected to monitor and document learnings and best practices from the project activities for improvement of future initiatives. The project requires active engagement with stakeholders in the rollout of social marketing programs for household water treatment products and other related activities. The WASH officers will also be responsible for implementing targeted hardware and software interventions around WASH activities such as solid waste management around the homestead. The incumbents will work closely with the local authorities and target communities to improve community knowledge, behavior change and promote best practices in water, sanitation, health and hygiene. In addition to supporting rehabilitative works, access to household water treatment and health and hygiene promotion, this position will assist with the monitoring and evaluation of the project.
