The activity is to carry out a study to analyze the cost-effectiveness of different feed options with the aim of reducing the cost of feed, the main cost driver in milk production. Currently, most dairy farmers are meeting the cow dietary requirements through pasture or veld grazing, limited supplementary feeding and few farmers applying zero grazings. Dairy feed accounts for more than 70 percent of milk production cost hence the need for reduction of feed cost is crucial for the dairying to be viable. The need is to analyze the cost-effectiveness of feed options (including zero and free-range grazing), different feed formulations and own feed production options.
