Job Summary

The Climate Justice Coordinator will report directly to the Programs Manager. He/she is primarily responsible for supporting a national climate justice movement. S/he will be expected to take the lead in the following:

Duties and Responsibilities


• Specific implementation of the Climate Justice project
• Implementation oversight support, including overseeing institutional knowledge and advocacy on climate justice and clean energy alternatives in the targeted areas amidst the increasing investments in fossil fuels.
• Coordinate a climate justice movement comprising of at least 10 organizations
• Enhance climate change and climate justice knowledge in rural mining communities
• Policy advice on climate change.
• Provide overall operational and technical support for the delivery of the Climate Justice Project
• Provide support to the timely and quality delivery of Periodic reports
• Support the monitoring and evaluation of the project.
• Support the identification of up-scaling opportunities and strategies in all Climate Justice initiatives
• Coordinate with Climate Change Consortium Partners to ensure timely and quality submission of work plans, financial and substantive reports on a regular basis
• Provide management with advice relating to strategic direction of project implementation
• Support the design, preparation, submission and approval of concept ideas/project proposals
• Assist with inception, contracting and start-up of programmes/projects

Competencies

• Project Management – implementation, monitoring and evaluation
• Fundraising and project proposal writing
• Practical experience in planning, managing and implementing climate change adaptation and resilience activities
• Movement building and climate justice activism
• Proven ability to coordinate a consortium is a key
• Knowledge of the linkage between the extractive sector and climate change
• Strong campaigning, advocacy and lobbying skills especially in mining communities
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, particularly within a diverse cultural and linguistic context.
• Demonstrated understanding of the impacts of climate change on key sectors and ability to provide guidance on the integration of climate risk management and, development of long term and medium-term responses to climate change
• Ability to work with multiple stakeholders across a wide range of disciplines
• Builds strong relationships with partners and mining communities
• Ability to respond positively to stakeholder feedback
• Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
• Demonstrates openness to change and ability to manage complexities
• Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills
• Remains calm, in control and good humoured even under pressure
• Proven networking, team building, organizational and communication skills.

Qualifications and Experience

Required Skills and Experience

Education & Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences, Climate Change, Development, Environmental Law or other closely related field.
• A clean Class 4 Drivers Licence

Experience:
• At least 5 years of relevant experience preferably in the area of climate justice and natural resources management, vulnerability mapping, governance, community-based development programmes, or closely related fields:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skill.
• Commitment to teamwork and to working across disciplines.
• Skills in facilitation and coordination, entrepreneurial spirit and demonstrated ability to work in an independent manner.
• Strong analytical, writing, communication and advocacy skills.
• IT literacy, familiarity with e-presentation techniques and ability to operate with on-line web-based applications
• Excellent drafting ability and presentation and communication skills, both oral and written
• Experience in the policy development processes associated with climate change.
Language Requirements:
• Excellent knowledge of the English language, with exceptional writing, presentation and communication skills.
• Fluency in Shona and/or Ndebele including excellent writing skills is an asset.
